In 2007, the Public Health Agency of Canada financially supported the Health and Fitness Program of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology to revise the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) and the related Physical Activity Readiness Medical Examination (ePARmed-X+). The intent of this evidence-based systematic process was to help reduce barriers to physical activity participation, facilitate and exact the identification of those persons who may require additional screening before should consult with their health professional before becoming more physically active, to simplify the follow-up clearance process and expedite the involvement of physicians and other allied health care professionals assist overburdened physicians, thereby reducing the health care costs associated with traditional medical clearance for physical activity and treatment of chronic diseases.
The original PAR-Q was developed by the British Columbia Ministry of Health and revised in 1992, 2002 and 2009. The paper version of the PAR-Q+ and the online screening tools (including the ePARmed-X+ online) were created using an evidence-based process by an Expert Advisory Committee of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology chaired by Dr. Darren E. R. Warburton with Dr. Norman Gledhill, Dr. Veronica Jamnik, and Dr. Donald C. McKenzie. Production of this document has been made possible through a financial contribution from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
